The thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck and the largest endocrine gland in the body. The thyroid gland secretes two important hormones - thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This hormone is responsible for the growth and metabolism of the body. Excessive secretion of thyroid hormone causes hyperthyroidism when secretion is not enough thyroid hormone causes hypothyroidism, which are the two most common problems faced by humans.
